Networking / Socializing / Lobbying - These are all terms commonly associated with the art of being able to communicate and introduce yourself when around new people. Traditionally, many people might not take this very seriously, but this is probably the best way to build relationships with professionals in your industry or any industry for that matter.
Attending professional events/ seminars is one great way to meet new people. Take this eg. If you're in investment banking or any financial career, knowing people from various sectors such as medical will first of all help you professionally - it broadens your perspective and who knows maybe your next transaction or project is in the medical industry - and secondly, if you or someone you care about is ever in need of a doctor or someone in the medical industry, all it takes is one phone call.
Relationships go a really long way, even in business.
